Structure
Work Packages
WASP was organised in seven work packages spanning project management, hardware, software platforms, networking protocols, services, applications and training.
Through all work packages four extra functional properties were leading: reduced energy consumption, timeliness, efficiency and security. WP4 results build on top of WP3 results, which are implemented on top of WP2 results. WP6 results are partially based on the services of WP5, and both WP6 and WP5 produce requirements on the results of WP2, WP3 and WP4.
The requirements and specification phases are detailed in the individual work packages rather than at the project level, to keep the freedom to choose the duration of those phases as a function of the subjects under discussion. Milestones and dependencies between work packages are expressed at the project level.
WP2 Deliverables
D2.1 Public Summary, covering the small and self containing sensor node hardware.
WP5 Deliverables
D5.1 Public Summary and D5.2 Design Programming Model, covering service based access to sensor data.
WP7 Deliverables
D7.2 Collection of SME Requirements and D7.3a Courses for Students.
Project management
Coordination of the consortium, reporting and delivery of D1.2 State of the Art.
Sensor node hardware
The sensor node had to be small and self containing. This hardware oriented work package covered the design of the MAC to support communication between nodes, the design of integrated sensors to measure physical parameters such as pressure and humidity, the design of the processors that activate the hardware and support sensor related software, their packaging to make the node flexible and extendable, and the generation and storage of energy by means such as scavenging. The emphasis was on exploiting the state of the art to make the projected flexibility possible.
Software platform
The software platform provides the software infrastructure on top of the configurable hardware node and the network connections to support efficient data collection and resource consumption optimisations. This work package focused on local optimisations and provided the hooks to higher level optimisation strategies, together with the frameworks in which network wide optimisations can be executed.
Networking protocols
The networking protocols provide abstractions that hide the individual nodes and the network topology. Applications do not address individual nodes but access the services and functions of the virtual moving objects they need to invoke. The abstractions also minimise user involvement in setting up and operating the network, since the sheer size of a WSN excludes configuring elements by hand. Securing the recognition and access of functions without configuration knowledge by the application is part of this work package, together with the granularity of functions recognisable by the application on different parts of the network.
Services
WASP took a service oriented approach to programming and securely accessing sensor data and maintenance. Different gateway architectures enable seamless access of sensor services from enterprise applications and delivery of event notifications triggered by sensors. Services programming models facilitate implementation of sensor applications by providing a powerful abstraction that also covers extra functional aspects, with emphasis on secure and privacy conserving interactions. Maintenance services help programmers to develop, test and deploy applications and to supervise the status of a wireless sensor network.
Applications
The applications guided the design and validated the results of WASP. The application provides guidelines on the detection of specialised functions dependent on the physiological aspects of the measured physical parameters, and guides the required abstraction to be accessible to the services.
Training
Training activities, including a collection of SME requirements and courses for students.
